The basilica Saint Francis of Assisi, a World Heritage Site, is the place that since 1230 has preserved and guarded the mortal remains of the “seraphic saint”. The lower part of basilica is dark while the upper one is slender towards the sky, airy and bright, with a single nave (as in the tradition of Franciscan churches) with cross vaults, polygonal apse and transept; it hosts wonderful works by Cimabue and Giotto including the famous cycle of frescoes from the life of Saint Francis.
