Francesco was born in Assisi in 1182. Son of rich merchants, understanding his mystical nature, he gave himself up to a life of penance and poverty calling his disciples Brothers. He died in 1226 and was canonized in 1228. The mortal remains of the “Poverello” are kept in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi which has become a symbol of peace. Thanks to the Songs of the Creatures, St. Francis is recognized as one of the initiators of the Italian literary tradition. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio chose his pontifical name in honor of him.
